Introduction
In the physical world, eating only one type of food leads to sickness, stunted growth, or a weakened immune system. Spiritually, we face the same risk. If we only consume "milk" (basic encouragement) and never "meat" (deep doctrine), we become spiritually frail. Conversely, if we study deep doctrine but never apply it through service, we become "spiritually obese"—full of knowledge but lacking the "muscle" to do God's work.
Main Verse: But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4
Main Points
"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." What we notice here is that we cannot live spiritually by some words of God, as this verse tells us, every word of God must be eaten. Not some! What are the key signs of unbalanced diet?
- The "Milk-Only" Diet (Perpetual Infancy): This occurs when a believer only seeks out messages that make them feel good or focus on basic promises. The Danger: You remain "unacquainted with the teaching about righteousness" and are easily deceived by false teachers. – "In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths... anyone who lives on milk... is still an infant."
Hebrews 5:12-13
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which {be} the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk {is} unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. {is unskillful: Gr. hath no experience}
- The "All Meat, No Exercise" Diet (Spiritual Pride): This happens when a believer spends all their time in deep theological study but has no "heart for service" or discovery of spiritual gifts. The Danger: Knowledge without love "puffs up" . It leads to a cold, judgmental spirit rather than Mature Adulthood.
1 Corinthians 8:1
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
– "Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."James 1:22
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
- The "All Activity, No Nourishment" Diet (Burnout): This is common in Young Adulthood where the believer is the "workforce of the Kingdom" but stops "feeding themselves" personally. The Danger: Without the "Internal Process" of sanctification through the Word, the believer eventually runs out of spiritual energy and collapses under trials. – "Apart from me you can do nothing."
John 15:5
I am the vine, ye {are} the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. {without me: or, severed from me}
Memory Verse
Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.— Jeremiah 15:16
Conclusion
Spiritual growth is not automatic; it is fuelled by what you consume. If you find yourself stuck in "Infancy" or feeling "weak" in your "Young Adulthood," check your diet. Are you eating the "whole counsel of God," or just the parts you like? To reach "Mature Adulthood" and leave a "Legacy of Fatherhood," you must be a "Self-Feeder" who correctly handles the Word of truth.
