Mature Adulthood – The Legacy of Fatherhood

Stages of Spiritual Development Spiritual-growth

Scripture

1 Corinthians 4:15

Description

Mature adulthood represents the pinnacle of spiritual growth, where the believer moves from a focus on personal survival and success to a focus on legacy and stewardship. Maturity is not an end-state where you stop growing; rather, it is the state where your growth becomes the foundation for someone else's life.

Introduction

Mature adulthood represents the pinnacle of spiritual growth, where the believer moves from a focus on personal survival and success to a focus on legacy and stewardship. While the young adult is busy fighting battles and finding their place, the mature adult has settled into a deep, seasoned relationship with God. In the physical world, an adult is expected to contribute to society and raise the next generation; in the spiritual world, the expectation is the same. Maturity is not an end-state where you stop growing; rather, it is the state where your growth becomes the foundation for someone else's life.

Main Verse:

1 Corinthians 4:15

For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet {have ye} not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

Main Points

"Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel." Being in the stage of mature adulthood, is defined by three major shifts:

  • From Consumer to Provider: You no longer come to the "table" just to be fed; you come to serve the meal.

  • From Being Led to Leading: You transition from needing constant guidance to providing a "spiritual map" for others.

  • From Strength to Stability: It is no longer about how high you can jump in your zeal, but how long you can stand in your faithfulness.

1 Corinthians 4:15

For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet {have ye} not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

– "Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel." You have to become a father! These are the characteristics of being one:

  • Discernment. The ability to look at complex situations and see them from God's perspective, distinguishing between good and "best" (

    Hebrews 5:14

    But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, {even} those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. {of full age: or, perfect} {use: or, an habit, or, perfection}

    ).

  • Discipleship: Spiritual reproduction (discipleship), long-term emotional stability, and the consistent manifestation of the Fruit of the Spirit (

    Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

    ).

  • Deeper Insight: A spiritual "father" or "mother" is not defined by age, but by their capacity to nurture. They provide the "spiritual shade" that protects infants from the heat of life's trials.

Memory Verse

And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.
— 2 Timothy 2:2

Conclusion

The goal of every Christian should be to become a spiritual parent. Who are you currently "fathering" or "mothering" in the faith?
